If you have seen the movie the Shinning, then you might remember the gracious hotel from where, the Shelley runs away to get rid from her wicked husband. That place loses its scariness due to large number of trees and number of surrounding buildings. This video is a part of series in which the image of that hotel has been made even scarier with the help of Photoshop. This is the first episode.

In this video tutorial, I’m going to show you a couple of tricks that you can use with adjustment layers and blending modes.

So I’ve opened up an image from the garden folder and go to the add fill adjustment icon at the bottom of the layers palette and select the invert adjustment layer. This is going to flip the pixels to the negative. And we’re just going to duplicate this same adjustment layer, you can just drag it to the new layer icon to duplicate it and when you do that, it looks like it did in its normal state.

And the midtones are everything in between and that’s really all there is to these terms.

They are vague terms as it turns out because shadows starts at black but it doesn’t end at a very specific brightness value. Doesn’t end at, you know at X percent grade or something along those lines. And midtones takes over at that point and then ends at a very light gray and then highlights takes over and goes to white. Highlights do include the white and shadows do include the blacks.
