Adobe Photoshop Tutorial – Layers
This is a Photoshop tutorial primarily focusing on layers. In Photoshop, layers are utmost important. If you know layers, you can add different colors, effects and positions to individual picture and still can put it one over another. It really makes editing images much easier. This seems wonderful and interesting and after going through the tutorial, you feel its not that difficult at all.
You can easily follow the steps and try it out without much difficulty. You can edit layers and give each layer a special effect like inner glow, color overlay, gradient overlay and so on. These effects are quite impressive and add a tinge of glamour to the original picture
I’m going to explain to you about layers. Layers were important in Photoshop. It’s basically a sheet of paper overlaying another one, transparent sheet of paper. If you’ve ever done drawing, animation etc., you know a layer is. It’s basically… look – like your sketching. Its like a drawing on a piece of a… tracing paper and then overlaying over another piece of paper with the drawing on top of it, see you can still see what is on the other layers pieces of paper and what is on the top one.
Now to create a new layer, you got desktop toolbar with layer, new, layer. All right, let’s go ahead and make two of them. So, layer, new layer, ya. All right, now we’ve got two. You should see two things from up down here. These are the layers. Now click on this boxed one with normal background, sets as a background, let’s make a colored background through. A.. there. Now we got background.
Now lets draw ourselves a black man, sorry. A.. head.. here we go. Make sure this layer here is selected. Now we’ve got ourselves a back man. Ok? A.. now you can move him about but you don’t have to edit the background. He is on his own layer. Now you can lock a layer which is using this. Little layers are lok.. locked you would get a pad lock come down here. To unlock, you just click on this this, up here and then you can edit it again. When you lock a layer, you cannot change it.
Now click on this other layer, and create a… m… yellow man. Here we go, that’s our yellow man. Now, you have to make sure layer two is selected that before you draw that and that’s basically another piece of paper overlaying the other ones. Now look, it goes over the top of that man there which is exactly we wanted to while this man goes in the deep. To rearrange a layer, because that’s how it’s positioned so, because layer two, a layer one is underneath layer two, this man is underneath him. Pretty simple, isn’t it? To rearrange it, you just click and drag up. One, this two, there we go. Now he goes over the top.
Now layers are very useful that can be used all sorts of things. E.g. you could change the opacity and you could a.. —- special effects by going to blending options like you know, effects such as drop shadow, outer glow, just make a bit more noticeable. Outer glow, inner glow, color overlay, gradient overlay, do all sorts of stuff.
Now that’s basically what you use layers for. You add separate pictures in using you want to apply different affect to or having position differently from everything else. It really makes edit… editing images much easier.
Now here is opacity that’s an important one to remember because that really help you when you’re making images especially —- you need to know what opacity — is. That’s basically how transparent it is. So, here we go, you change it and it changes straight away so its quite simple, isn’t it?
